Infrastructure Renewal and Accessibility Enhancement

As part of the New York City Transit Authority’s ongoing commitment to improving rider safety, accessibility, and infrastructure reliability, this project focuses on critical upgrades for ADA accessibility and station modernization.

The project

The Rockaway Parkway Station in Brooklyn, a vital hub for daily commuters, underwent a comprehensive upgrade to improve both its exterior bus depot facilities and interior station amenities. Managed under two contracts, A-38100 and A-37119, the project was designed to modernize infrastructure, enhance accessibility, and extend the long-term functionality of this key transit facility.

The development

The first phase focused on the exterior installation of the Bus Depot Facility. This scope included the replacement of over 20,000 square feet of asphalt paving, installation of new steel-faced curbs and concrete sidewalks, and improvements to entrance ramps to meet ADA compliance standards. Additional work involved the construction of a new refuse room, installation of four turnstiles and AFC railings, and the creation of a freestanding canopy to better serve commuters and transit operations.

The second phase, Contract A-37119, targeted interior station upgrades. This included the rehabilitation of the historic control house, replacement of windows, installation of modern lighting fixtures, and a complete roof replacement. Together, these improvements elevated both the functionality and aesthetics of the station while ensuring compliance with accessibility requirements.

The result

A revitalized Rockaway Parkway Station and Bus Depot that not only meets modern transit standards but also creates a safer, more accessible, and more efficient environment for commuters and staff alike. With the bus depot successfully turned over to NYCT in 2020, the project represents a significant investment in maintaining the reliability and resilience of Brooklyn’s transit infrastructure.
