TECHNICO Construction Services Inc. is finalizing the construction of a two-story addition with a full cellar at PS Q174Q, in Springfield Gardens, Queens, NY. The project, commissioned by the NYC School Construction Authority and designed by Ciardullo Architecture & Engineering P.C., addresses the increasing need for classroom space in District 29. This expansion adds 29,531 sq. ft. of new instructional and support spaces, significantly enhancing the capacity of the existing school campus.
Theproject
The proposed addition includes a wide array of educational facilities: multiple classrooms for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and grades 1 through 5, and a state-of-the-art computer room in the cellar. Specialized instructional areas such as an art room, OT/PT resource room, and a project room are also incorporated.
Thedevelopment
From a construction standpoint, the structure is supported by a steel and concrete frame system, complemented by reinforced CMU walls for lateral stability and acoustic control. The floorplates were designed with modularity in mind, enabling consistent spans and reducing on-site complexity. Mechanical and electrical systems were strategically located to optimize access and performance, with an additional 415 sq. ft. dedicated to mechanical areas.
Site planning was carefully balanced within the R3-1 zoning designation. The new lot coverage of 14,973 sq. ft. seamlessly integrates with the existing 593 sq. ft. comfort station, resulting in a total proposed lot coverage of 15,566 sq. ft.

Emphasizing long-term value and environmental responsibility, the addition is constructed in accordance with the NYC Green Schools Guide and is on track to achieve LEED certification. Solar panels and other high-efficiency systems are integrated into the design to improve energy performance and reduce operational costs over time.
Exterior finishes were selected for both durability and contextual fit, balancing modern architectural expression with the surrounding residential neighborhood. High-performance glazing and a thermally efficient envelope will contribute to improved indoor comfort and environmental control throughout the school year.
This school expansion exemplifies TECHNICO Construction’s commitment to educational infrastructure in New York City. Through coordination with architects, engineers, and the SCA, this project reinforces our ability to deliver integrated, code-compliant learning environments that prioritize both function and form. PS Q174 will emerge as a modern academic facility designed to serve its growing student population with pride and purpose.
