Building Addition and Modernization
TECHNICO Construction Services Inc. proudly delivered the new 50,000 sq. ft. addition to PS 19X, a fully accessible pre-kindergarten through 8th grade school in the Bronx, NY. The project was commissioned by the NYC School Construction Authority and designed by RKTB Architects, with final completion in 2022.
The project
The four-story steel-frame structure, supported on spread footings, includes a new lobby, cafetorium, gymnasium, kitchen, classrooms, a specialized administrative suite, and a nurse’s office. Structural features include concrete-on-metal deck floors and a brick-and- block exterior envelope that seamlessly integrate with the existing campus architecture.
Aluminum-framed windows and storefront systems provide energy-efficient daylighting and visual connection to the outdoors. Two new elevators ensure full accessibility in compliance with ADA standards.
Interior design elements feature durable finishes such as wall tiling inspired by local history, featuring quotes from individuals interred in nearby Woodlawn Cemetery, resilient flooring, suspended ceilings, and custom millwork.
MEP systems include three rooftop HVAC units (RTUs), complete fire protection, intrusion detection, and fire alarm systems, as well as new utility services.
Site improvements include landscaping, new curbs, fencing, paved play areas with game lines, street trees, and extensive drainage upgrades.
The development
The project’s multi-phased approach enabled the successful renovation of the existing building while it remained occupied. Significant upgrades were implemented to essential building components, including classrooms, office spaces, repurposed common areas, and low-voltage systems. TECHNICO executed partial demolition and internal modifications to the existing school, creating seamless floor alignment between old and new structures.
The result
Construction adhered to NYC Green Schools Guide, achieving LEED Gold equivalency, ensuring sustainable and high-performance building design. The expanded PS 19X now accommodates 200 additional students in a modern, inclusive, and dynamic learning environment. TECHNICO is proud to contribute to a project that elevates educational infrastructure and community growth in the Bronx.
