TECHNICO Construction Services Inc. proudly delivered the PS 254K Addition, located in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY. This 47,000 sq. ft. new construction project was completed in 2022 under the management of the New York City School Construction Authority and designed by STV Inc. Serving students in Pre-K through 5th grade and ungraded special education, the project enhances the school’s educational and recreational offerings with state-of-the-art learning spaces and a multi-functional gymnatorium.
The scope of work included a building addition featuring 16 new classrooms, a STEM lab, and a gymnatorium, expanding the educational facilities for grades pre-kindergarten through 5th and ungraded special education students.
Theproject
The structural system of the new building consists of a combination of helical and drilled displacement piles supporting a concrete-on-deck structural steel superstructure. The building envelope utilizes traditional brick and block construction with bond beam lintels, aluminum windows, and aluminum storefronts. Additionally, a new elevator installation ensures full accessibility, making the facility fully ADA compliant.
Furthermore, the project involved comprehensive MEP installations. A new standalone HVAC system was implemented, featuring a variable air volume (VAV) design supported by three rooftop units. To ensure efficient operation, independent gas, electric, sewer, and water services were introduced for the new addition. Furthermore, fire protection systems—including sprinklers, fire alarms, and intrusion detection—were installed and fully commissioned to meet all current safety codes.
Thedevelopment
Work extended beyond the new structure to include architectural, structural, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC renovations in the existing building. The cafeteria was extended, and interior upgrades were aligned with DOE standards to ensure compatibility between the new and existing portions of the campus. Despite the school’s original construction in 1938, all modifications were coordinated to preserve integrity while meeting modern performance criteria.
