Building Addition and Modernization

TECHNICO Construction Services served as the general contractor for the new addition and renovation of PS 87X, a public elementary school located in the Wakefield neighborhood of the Bronx. Designed by RKTB Architects and managed by the NYC School Construction Authority, this major capital project is part of the City’s ongoing initiative to modernize educational infrastructure across the five boroughs.

The project

With a focus on meeting contemporary standards, improving accessibility, and ensuring long-term durability, the project includes the construction of a new four-story annex, adding approximately 58,500 square feet to the existing structure and bringing the total building area to over 100,000 square feet. The expansion provides 325 new student seats and features general and special education classrooms, a cafeteria, gymnasium, administrative offices, outdoor play areas, and a welcoming entrance lobby that enhances visibility and fosters community engagement.

The new structure is built on a predominantly steel frame and enclosed with 318 prefabricated insulated concrete wall panels in four distinct brick tones, accented by a deep blue feature wall. As part of the scope, TECHNICO completed full systems installation, including mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, electrical, and fire alarm infrastructure.

The development

The project’s multi-phased approach was critical to successfully renovating the existing building while it remained occupied. Significant upgrades were carried out on essential building components, including classrooms, office spaces, repurposed common areas, and low-voltage systems. TECHNICO also constructed a new connecting corridor to link the existing building with the new annex and completed the full lower roof replacement.

The result

Sustainability is integral to the project. The facility is designed to achieve LEED Silver equivalency through the integration of energy-efficient HVAC systems, eco-conscious materials, and compliance with local environmental laws.

TECHNICO is proud to deliver a modern educational environment that enhances academic opportunities and supports the identity and vitality of the Wakefield community. Project completion is anticipated in Fall of 2025.
