TECHNICO Construction Services Inc. is proud to lead the renovation of the 69th Regiment Armory; a Beaux-Arts landmark building on Lexington Avenue, in Manhattan, NY, which has been home to the famed “Fighting 69th” Regiment of the New York Army National Guard for over a century. To preserve its historic legacy while transforming the facility into a modern readiness center, the New York State Office of General Services (OGS), in partnership with the Division of Military and Naval Affairs, launched a comprehensive restoration and modernization initiative.
Theproject
Work on the armory began with abatement and extensive interior demolition, preparing the building for new infrastructure and systems while protecting its historic fabric. Careful measures are taken to preserve significant architectural elements by encasing high value historic finishes within protection walls. These include original staircases, murals, detailed entryways and artwork.
THEDEVELOPMENT
The existing structural system consists of a brick shell, brick bearing walls, concrete encased steel beams and arched concrete slabs spanning beams. TECHNICO’s team is installing new structural steel framing and concrete slabs to increase the usable square footage, to accommodate additional egress stairs, allow for new modern HVAC/plumbing equipment and preserve the integrity of existing structure. Under the barrel roof is a world class drill hall space with ceiling heights up to 120’ at its peak and has a 37,000 sq. ft. footprint. The drill hall roof structure consists of built up radiused steel trusses and cast in place concrete panels. The exterior barrel roof is being replaced with a state-of-the-art new roofing system and repairs are being performed at the underside of concrete slabs. Construction in the drill hall area includes a new concrete vehicle ramp to improve accessibility and operational efficiency.
ContinuedDevelopment
Alongside this, the project encompasses broad historical preservation efforts, such as the repair and cleaning of exterior brick and limestone bandings, restoration of historic millwork and upgrades designed to meet modern sustainability measures, aligned with LEED Gold goals, and safety standards. Together, these improvements safeguard the building’s architectural integrity while equipping it to serve as a state-of-the-art mobilization and training hub for decades to come.
